6:30PM Workshop

Join Beach House Artist in Residence Holly Rothschild for an exploration of site, movement, and process in this free 2-hour workshop. Participants will be invited to create movement based on the architecture of the Beach House (formerly the Marion Davies estate), as well through ideas and poetic tasks, such as "find an indirect way to go from the tree to the chair", “imagine you are one of Marion’s houseguests", or "use a movement than reminds you of your name".

If you attended the March workshop, come back to explore your choreographic process more deeply – and if you're new, please join us as everything will be thoroughly explained. We will again be exploring the site using writing and drawing as a source for creating movement. At the end of the workshop, there will be a mini performance culminating in a discussion.  This workshop is appropriate for all ages from teens to seniors; no dance experience required. Youth must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Please come wearing comfortable clothing. Sign up for the May 3 culminating performance at http://www.eventbrite.com/org/199463539.

Holly Rothschild is a dancer, choreographer, musician, and educator. Her collaborative and independent work has been presented at the Broad Stage, TED, The Athenaeum in Chicago, the 2006 and 2007 Grammy’s, The Wintergarden in New York City, The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, and at many universities, venues and theaters throughout the U.S. and abroad. In 2008, she directed and choreographed Grey Shanty, a short dance film that was accepted into the 6th Annual Sans Souci Festival of Dance Cinema. Rothschild has created many original evening length dance theater pieces, site-specific works, original adaptations of theater works, and has choreographed several plays. Her work has received critical acclaim in Performing Arts Journal.

She is the founder and artistic director of Strange & Elegant Choreography and Performance Installations, a dance performance company that creates site-specific dance. Rothschild is also a co-founder, with designer/composer Luke Rothschild and cellist Joseph Harvey, of String Theory, a hybrid performance ensemble featuring musicians, dancers and large-scale sonic sculpture. As a movement educator, Rothschild spent several years as artist-in-residence in the theatre department at Chicago's Columbia College where she taught movement for actors. She believes in the power of inclusive dance and has taught contemporary dance and performance workshops throughout the US to people with disabilities, senior citizens at San Francisco’s Theatre Artaud, and actors at Chicago's Second City, as well as contact improvisation at a correctional facility in Alaska.
